We are an international organisation responsible for preserving cemeteries and memorials around the World, commemorating the sacrifices made by the Commonwealth forces during the two World Wars.

We are looking for an experienced and practical technical person to support our Operations Supervisor in the inspection and carrying out of structural and horticultural maintenance of war graves and memorials throughout South Africa.

To be successful you will be able to demonstrate the ability to solve problems, work as a proactive and positive member of a small team, be a confident and effective traveller and able to carry out a variety of maintenance tasks, to include, but not limited to; fixing headstones, repointing, erecting structures, e.g., fences, retaining walls, refurbishing bronze features and horticultural maintenance. You will also be effective at sourcing and purchasing local materials and also engaging and managing local labour as required.

About this Role

The post holder works in a mobile role or at a static site, and is responsible for the maintenance of a number of specific plots within a region under the supervision of the (Senior) Head Gardener. He/she carries out gardening maintenance to the standards of excellence as set by the Commission, and according to horticultural policies and procedures. This is a practical role, requiring maintenance craft skills to undertake a wide range of duties. These include turf culture, headstone border, maintenance and planting, pest control, machinery operation and maintenance and the care of ornamental features.

Commemorations Support Coordinator

Location: Maidenhead, with a minimum of 2 days a week in the office

Our Commemorations team are at the heart of the CWGC’s mission to remember those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

You'll play a vital part in supporting the Commemorations programme, responding to enquiries, maintaining the casualty database, and processing the output of casework and policy decisions. The role also involves tracking progress from headstone order to engraving and installation, so collaboration is crucial.

Beyond these tasks, you'll help with historical research using CWGC archives, published historical materials and documentary sources. Your role also involves cultivating a deep understanding of Commemorations policy, enabling you to provide valuable internal and external advice on its practical implementation.

SKILLED MAINTENANCE CRAFTSPERSON – WEST REGION, UNITED KINGDOM

Location: Working out of Cardiff to cover the West region with a focus on Wales and Herefordshire

What you'll be doing

We are excited to offer this opportunity for a Skilled Maintenance Craftsperson to join our team. The role encompasses structural and horticultural duties. Maintaining commemorations and headstones through tasks like cleaning, graffiti removal, and replacing damaged headstones. It also includes managing the collection, transportation, and erection of headstones. Horticultural responsibilities involve strimming, vegetation removal, and aiding in renovation projects. These are just a snapshot of the duties for this role. This is a mobile role with lots of travel, so you’ll have use of a van and it’s essential you’re able to park it overnight at your address. The role is practical, hands-on and requires a decent level of physical fitness. There will be occasional overnight stays, of which costs will be contributed.
