Location information

Portovenere is on the west side of the exit of the Gulf of Spezia. It is a small Medieval village with no vehicular access. The cemetery is situated above the village. The cemetery, containing one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, is known as "Il Cimitero medievale" and is adjacent to the Church of San Lorenzo. It can only be reached on foot by following many steep stairways through narrow streets. Visitors can enter the village from Torre Capitolare Ancient Door then go along Via Capellini where there is an entrance to the cemetery via some stairs. Follow the sign "Per il Castello". History information

The Italians entered the war on the Allied side, declaring war on Austria, in May 1915. Commonwealth forces were at the Italian front between November 1917 and November 1918. The Royal and Merchant Navies were active in the Mediterranean and Adriatic throughout the war and many of their dead are buried along the Italian coast. Portovenere Communal Cemetery contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War.
