Location information

Narvik is a major port on the north west coast of Norway. Narvik Old Cemetery is on the Stasjonsveien. It can most easily be reached via the Narvik New Cemetery. To reach Narvik New Cemetery follow the main E6 northwards through the town and over the railway bridge just past the tourist information centre on Rongensgate. The road bends sharply to the right then curves gently left. The cemetery is on the right side approximately 1 km past the bridge and the entrance is reached via a slip road off the main road rising to a parking area outside the gates. From the entrance to the New Cemetery follow the main path uphill approximately 100 metres to the cross junction and turn left. Follow this path past the chapel, through a gate and over the railway line (pedestrian crossing), up the slope and through a second gate into Stasjonsveien. Turn right and follow Stasjonveien for 100 metres to the gate into the cemetery on the left. From the gate take the first path off to the right and follow this for approximately 100 metres, about 25 metres short of the boundary fence. The First World War memorial, a granite obelisk three metres high surrounded by bollards and chains, is five metres off the path on the left hand side.

History information

Narvik Old Cemetery contains 13 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, all sailors from HMS " India", an armed merchant cruiser sunk by submarine in the Vest Fjord on 8 August 1915. The graves are marked by a private memorial.
