    The citation in the London Gazette for 23rd March, 1945, reads: "Posthumously awarded the George Cross for most conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner."

    Cpl. Horsfield made several attempts to rescue a man trapped in rubble following an ammunition explosion, he continued to do so regardless of impending danger until a second explosion caused him severe injuries from which he subsequently died.
