A posthumous George Cross was awarded to Leading Aircraftman A.M. Osborne, R.A.F., for his fearless conduct in fire-fighting and rescue operations in which he saved pilots and others from certain death. He was killed on 2nd April, 1942 whilst leading a party to extinguish the flames in a burning aircraft. The Air Officer Commanding R.A.F. Mediterranean said that Aircraftman Osborne was "one of the bravest men it has been my privilege to meet".
