Vandalism to War Graves at Belfast City Cemetery unacceptable

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has described the latest in a series of acts of vandalism to war graves at Belfast City Cemetery as unacceptable.

The incident, in which 19 war graves were destroyed, has been reported to the authorities who have appealed for help with their investigations.

Over the past twelve months, war graves within the cemetery have been repeatedly targeted. The scale and frequency of the damage is so significant that it is hindering CWGC’s efforts to restore the war graves to their former condition.

The most recent act of vandalism to war graves at Belfast City Cemetery is an unwelcome and unacceptable situation that threatens the long-term security of CWGC’s work in the site.

However, CWGC is extremely grateful for the strong moral and practical support it has received from local authorities and community leaders. We will continue to work with them to monitor the situation and we are fully supportive of their efforts to address the anti-social behaviour at the cemetery.
