Vandalism at Odense (Assistens) Cemetery, Denmark

We have today been informed by our contacts within Denmark, of an incident of vandalism to several war graves within Odense (Assistens) Cemetery. Initial reports indicate that a number of graves were “tagged” by marker pen.

Our works teams are in contact with our Representative in Denmark and the local authority and are advising on the best method of removal. We expect the site to be restored shortly.

The cemetery contains 24 war graves in total. The majority of the war graves are aircrew and are contained within a single plot in which local people erected a monument inscribed "In memory of British and Canadian airmen who gave their lives in the battle for freedom during the war 1939-1945". The graves include the crew of “MacRobert’s Reply” – more detail on which can be found at CWGC’s Blog pages.
