CWGC trains a new generation of master stone masons

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission offers internal vocational training to its employees in order to pass on the craft of stone masonry to the new generation. In this way the CWGC ensures we have the skills to take care of the cemeteries and memorials in our care.

CWGC reuses original materials and crafts to preserve its historic heritage for the future. Many of the cemetery elements are gradually showing signs of erosion and need to be restored - preferably while retaining as many original features as possible.

The CWGC started its internal specialisation course in stone masonry with training specialist Compaan at the beginning of March in Ypres. Dozens of employees are learning the skills of restorative stone masonry. CWGC workers can volunteer for this and go through three different modules in the process. It takes many years to get from beginner to semi-skilled worker (module 1) to skilled worker (module 2) and finally to master stone masonry and sculpting (module 3).

The training syllabus covers the following:

Module 1:  From beginner to ‘semi-skilled worker’
Basic principles of stone masonry;
Re-engraving a CWGC headstone;
Restoring a CWGC headstone using inserts;
Cutting according to plan e.g. Natural stone gargoyle

Module 2:  From ‘semi-skilled’ to ‘skilled worker’
Designing a step-by-step plan;
Advanced repairs and more complex mouldings;
Cutting of round natural stone elements; 
Safe mechanical use;
Measuring with profiles

Module 3: from ‘skilled worker’ to expert
Complex sculpture and restoration of e.g. Cross of Sacrifice;
Installation of name panels on Memorials;
Making of plans

Each of the three modules consists of external vocational training followed by an internal apprenticeship at Commonwealth War Graves Commission sites with an examination at the end of each module.

Over the next decade, CWGC aims to prepare the next generation of stone masons to continue the enormous task of maintaining and restoring our cemeteries and monuments. Similar training courses are also being organised for our employees ensuring valuable skills are not lost.
