CWGC Archive - A Family connection

As Explore Your Archive Week continues, the Commonwealth War Graves Commissions' (CWGC) archive team welcomed Barnaby Oswald to the Commission and learned about the Oswalds' remarkable family history and his personal connection to the CWGC.

Barnaby is the Great Grandson of Colonel Christopher Percy Oswald, who oversaw the Commissions' financial affairs from 1919 to 1937. Christopher had great influence on the Commissions' policies during an important time in the organisations' development.

After visiting Ieper earlier in the month, Barnaby was inspired to learn more about his own family history, using the CWGC online archive catalogue. He discovered two watercolour paintings attributed to his Great-Grandmother and got in touch with the archive team to find out more.

EXPLORE YOUR ARCHIVE

Running until Sunday 25 November, CWGC will be selecting items from the archive that help to shine a light on our work to commemorate the 1.7 million Commonwealth men and women who died in the two World Wars.

Daily themes ranging from animals and music to maritime and sport will show how the CWGC archive, along with other archives around the country, are packed full of objects that give us an insight into our collective history.

Keep an eye out on the CWGCs' social media channels all this week to see what’s in store.
