The Thiepval Memorial commemorates more than 72,000 men of British and South African forces who died on the Somme during the First World War and have no known grave. Most of these men died during the Somme offensive of 1916.

Poznan Old Garrison Cemetery was created after the First World War, when more than 170 POWs were laid to rest. During the Second World War the graves from nearby Prisoner of War camps and temporary burial grounds were added. Today it’s the final resting place of almost 450 First and Second World War service personnel, including forty-eight of the fifty executed servicemen of The Great Escape.

Nearly all of the 988 Second World War burials in Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery are of airmen, with two-thirds of them Canadian. Many of these men died whilst in Harrogate General Hospital. There are also 23 causalities buried here from the First World War.

More than 54,000 names are inscribed on the walls of the Menin Gate who died in Belgium and have no known grave. Since 1928 the Last Post has been sounded every evening at 8pm under the arches of the memorial, only stopping during the Second World War. Today it serves as a focus point for many visitors and ceremonies commemorating the Great War.

Bergen-op-Zoom War Cemetery contains more than 1,200 casualties from the Second World War. Many of those commemorated were involved in the Battle for Walcheren, a battle for an island that dominated a nearby river and had been fortified by the Germans.
